The first workshop, entitled Passengers with Reduced Mobility, is scheduled to run over May 16-18 next year in San Francisco. A follow-up, intermediate level course, focussing on the rôles and responsibilities of airport access co-ordinators, will be launched in the third quarter of 2016. Additional workshops are envisioned during 2017.
These new training offerings represent a growing partnership between ACI and ODO, the aim of which is to help the aviation industry better accommodate travellers with sensory disabilities or reduced mobility. At certain US hubs, airlines currently provide more than 1m wheelchair operations every year.
The Passengers with Reduced Mobility workshop will provide an introduction to US disability rights legislation, architectural accessibility standards, adaptive information technology and how to appropriately accommodate a wide range of passengers with disabilities. It will conclude with a walking tour of the airport, which will allow attendees to focus on accessibility elements, and explain how travellers with all types of disabilities function and navigate such a complex environment. Additional details on this course, as well as the intermediate level course, are to be released in the near future.
