Another of several successful construction projects for MIA, the Parsons-Odebrecht joint venture has been collaborating at the airport for 15 years. This project will see the in-line security screening section of the South Terminal baggage handling system (BHS) replaced, as well as the installation of an automated sortation system for the Central Terminal BHS.
This automated system will include outbound baggage conveyance systems, electrical modifications and power distribution systems, as well as mechanical modifications, a 60,000 square foot expansion of the existing terminal building and a post-security corridor connecting Terminals G and H.
The contract for pre-construction services is US$7.5m, with a construction budget of US$177m. The US Transportation Security Administration is supporting the project with a grant of US$101m to Miami-Dade County. Local small business and Disadvantaged Business Enterprise participation in the project is estimated to be over US$25m, with some 600 jobs to be created locally.
The Miami-Dade Aviation Department, which manages MIA, has set a goal of Silver Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, or LEED, for the project.
