Plans for the first global carbon dioxide emissions standards for passenger aircraft have taken a significant step forward, with the recommendation of a new standard by an ICAO committee.
A new standard was unanimously recommended by the 170 international experts on ICAO’s Committee on Aviation Environmental Protection and this is expected to pave the way for its adoption by ICAO’s Governing Council this coming autumn. However, the advance was described as insufficient by one environmental group, which said that it was unlikely to have any effect on climate change.
The CAEP recommendation will see the new CO2 emissions standard being applied not only to new aircraft types from 2020, but also to new deliveries of current aircraft types from 2023. A cut-off date of 2028 for aircraft that do not comply with the standard was also recommended.
